Frequently Asked Questions
What is a REMS Echolight Scan?
Osteo Scan employs the state-of-the-art REMS Echolight scan, a radiation-free technology that provides highly accurate assessments of your bone health. By measuring bone density and fragility, it helps identify potential issues early, reducing the risk of fractures. Unlike conventional X-ray tests, REMS is safer, delivers more precise data, and provides instant results, making it an excellent tool for proactive bone health monitoring.
Is REMS Echolight Better than DEXA for Bone Density Testing?
REMS Echolight offers several key benefits over traditional DEXA scans. It is radiation-free, portable, and provides a more comprehensive evaluation of bone health, including detailed insights into bone density and fragility. Additionally, it assesses fracture risk, making it a superior tool for diagnosing osteoporosis. Numerous clinical studies have shown that REMS is just as reliable as DEXA, and in many cases, more accurate—particularly for individuals with conditions like Type 2 Diabetes or during pregnancy.
No Radiation Exposure: Unlike DEXA, REMS is completely radiation-free, allowing for safer, repeat scans.
Portable and Flexible: REMS technology is portable and can be used in diverse settings, offering greater accessibility compared to the fixed DEXA machines.
Comprehensive Bone Health Evaluation: REMS analyzes bone micro-architecture and calculates a 5-year fracture risk, providing a more in-depth assessment of bone health.
Reliable in Special Cases: REMS delivers accurate results in situations where DEXA may be limited by skeletal or metallic artifacts or in patients with Type 2 Diabetes.
What to Expect During Your First REMS Echolight Scan Appointment?
Your first REMS Echolight scan with Osteo Scan is designed to be smooth, comfortable, and informative. We will come to your location, ensuring a professional and comfortable experience throughout the process. We'll begin with a brief introduction to REMS technology, highlighting how this non-invasive, radiation-free method evaluates your bone health.
During the scan, you’ll lie comfortably on an exam table as our technician scans specific bone areas. The process is completely painless and lasts just 20-30 minutes. Afterward, our bone health specialist will review your results, offering a detailed overview of your bone density and overall health. Any recommendations or follow-up steps will be clearly explained, ensuring you leave fully informed and confident about your next steps.
How often can I get a REMS scan?
Since REMS technology is free from ionizing radiation, there is no risk associated with undergoing scans as often as desired. However, receiving a follow-up scan too soon after the initial scan may not reveal significant changes in bone mineral density. We recommend a minimum interval of 3 months between scans, with many patients benefiting from waiting at least 6 months for follow-up imaging to obtain more meaningful results.
What body parts does REMS image?
REMS is currently set up to provide diagnostic information for the lumbar spine and hip joints, similar to a standard DEXA scan. Ongoing data collection on additional areas of the body will soon enable REMS imaging of other regions, such as the forearm.
